As a child, I loved stories about monsters, as an adult I STILL DO! So if you have a picture book out there with Halloween themes, monsters, or anything creepy-cute, chances are I’m going to LOVE IT! I jumped at the chance to receive a copy of Zombie Cat, no wait, more like lunged at the chance to see what it was all about, and it certainly didn’t disappoint!
The story is written by Isabel Atherton and the adorably silly illustrations are provided by the talented Bethany Straker. If you’re expecting a story about a silly kitty that just bites everyone and starts up the zombie apocalypse, this is not that tale. Instead this is a story of true friendship with a creepy-cute twist!
Zombie Cat was a pretty apathetic kitty until a power plant spill created zombie mice, one of which bit and turns him! Dare I say Revenge of the Mice might make a great working title for a prequel 😉 I DARE!
So after kitty gets turned, he starts rotting pretty quickly but he doesn’t start jumping at brains immediately. He still seems to have a conscience about it. He happens to make his way home to his owner Jake, who’s hiding out in their family home from hordes of zombies. Jake is a bit reluctant to take him back in, and rightfully so, he’s a ZOMBIE CAT! But perhaps my favourite part of the story is when Jake lets him in and stiches him back together, now that’s love! The duo decide to spend the end of days together where Jake most likely kept sleeping with one eye open and zombie cat spent his days fighting off the desire to eat him. Hey, all relationships have their ups and downs right?!
I give this book 4 out of 5 zombies!
The pictures are great, I wish there was a bit more action or adventure,
but it’s definitely quirky, unique and super funny!
